Independent travellers warned against 'standard' insurance
10th July 2008
British travellers heading off by themselves on trips abroad should take care to insure themselves and their personal possessions properly.
That is according to insurance provider AXA, which has warned travellers who are not going on a package trip to avoid "standard" insurance as it may not cover possessions such as cameras adequately.
Other problems which can arise with this type of policy are no cover for cancelled flights or missed connections, the insurer pointed out.
However, as noted by AXA there are some very good independent travel insurance policies which will cover holidaymakers for an array of eventualities, such as natural disasters and unused accommodation.
AXA's Edward Dutton stressed the importance of taking out a policy which covers various incidences relating to personal possessions like cameras or to holidaymakers themselves.
He explained: "Travel insurance has come under some criticism for some of the exclusions in a traditional policy. In 2006, 21 million travel policies were taken out - if over half of these are not meeting potential requirements then this is something consumers need to be aware of."
